From High Peaks to Hot Springs
The Gasa Laya Trek (often called the Laya–Gasa Trek) is a stunning journey along Bhutan’s northern frontier, combining dramatic mountain scenery with rich highland culture. You’ll walk beneath towering peaks, visit the semi‑nomadic village of Laya, and finish near the famous hot springs of Gasa. It’s an ideal choice for trekkers who want a taste of the Snowman region without committing to a full expedition.
Itinerary (Sample 12‑Day Route)
- ✓ Day 1–3: Paro to Jomolhari Region
- ✓ Day 4–5: Jangothang to Lingshi
- ✓ Day 6–8: Lingshi to Laya
- ✓ Day 9–10: Laya to Gasa
- ✓ Day 11–12: Gasa to Roadhead & Transfer
Start in Paro and follow the Jomolhari approach, trekking through forests and river valleys to reach the high‑mountain camps around Jangothang. These days provide acclimatization and early exposure to Bhutan’s northern peaks.
Cross a high pass and descend into the Lingshi valley, where dramatic cliffs, fortress‑like ridges, and yak‑herder camps define the landscape. Camps are remote and atmospheric, with wide views and clear night skies.
Continue north toward Laya, passing through high pastures and wild valleys. Arriving in Laya, you’ll have time to explore this unique highland village, meet local families, and experience the distinctive dress and culture of the Layaps.
The trail gradually descends from the high country toward the forests and warmer air of Gasa. You’ll pass waterfalls, deep valleys, and thick woodland before reaching the Gasa area, where the famous hot springs offer a welcome soak after days on the trail.
Spend a final morning relaxing in the hot springs or exploring the surroundings before trekking to the roadhead. From here, drive onward to Punakha or Thimphu, bringing your Gasa Laya adventure to a close.
