Journey to the Sacred Mountain

The Jomolhari Trek is Bhutan’s legendary high‑altitude journey, leading you through ancient forests, wild river valleys, and windswept alpine meadows before revealing one of the Himalayas’ most breathtaking sights—Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m) rising like a guardian over the landscape. Over eight unforgettable days, you’ll walk alongside yak‑herder trails, cross dramatic high passes, and camp beneath star‑filled skies in some of the most pristine wilderness in the world. This trek blends raw Himalayan grandeur with Bhutan’s deep cultural soul, offering a rare chance to disconnect from the modern world and experience nature in its purest, most awe‑inspiring form.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Paro → Sharna Zampa → Thangthangkha
  • Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Paro to Sharna Zampa, where the trail follows the rushing Paro Chhu through dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. The path winds along the river, crossing wooden bridges and passing through quiet woodland clearings before gradually climbing into a narrowing valley. As you approach Thangthangkha (3,610 m), the forest thins and the landscape opens, offering your first tantalizing glimpse of Mount Jomolhari’s snow‑capped summit if the weather is clear.

  • Day 2: Thangthangkha → Jangothang (Base Camp)
  • The valley widens dramatically as you continue upward, passing small stone houses, grazing yaks, and traditional Bhutanese villages. The scenery becomes increasingly alpine, with rugged cliffs and open meadows leading you toward the breathtaking amphitheater of Jangothang (4,100 m). Known as one of the most beautiful campsites in the Himalayas, Jangothang sits directly beneath the towering north face of Jomolhari, creating an unforgettable backdrop for the night.

  • Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Jangothang
  • A full day at Jangothang allows your body to adjust to the altitude while giving you time to explore the surrounding ridges. Optional hikes lead to panoramic viewpoints overlooking Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tserim Kang, with glacial valleys stretching out below. The day is unhurried and deeply rewarding, offering space to soak in the silence, the scale of the mountains, and the raw beauty of the high Himalayas.

  • Day 4: Jangothang → Lingshi via Nyele La Pass
  • Today’s trek begins with a steady ascent toward Nyele La (4,700 m), the first major high pass of the journey. The climb is gradual but exhilarating, with sweeping views unfolding behind you as you gain height. From the pass, the trail descends into the remote valley of Lingshi (4,010 m), a dramatic landscape of cliffs, fortress‑like rock formations, and scattered yak‑herder camps. This is one of the most atmospheric sections of the trek.

  • Day 5: Lingshi → Shodu
  • Leaving Lingshi, the trail follows high pastures and alpine slopes, gradually climbing toward the base of Yeli La. The scenery is wild and expansive, with cascading waterfalls, grazing yaks, and distant peaks framing the valley. You eventually descend to Shodu (4,080 m), a peaceful campsite nestled beside a clear mountain stream, surrounded by steep cliffs and quiet forest

  • Day 6: Shodu → Barshong
  • The landscape shifts as you descend from the high alpine zone into lush forests of rhododendron, birch, and juniper. The trail follows the Thimphu Chhu river, weaving through narrow gorges and sunlit meadows. Occasional openings in the forest reveal dramatic rock faces and glimpses of the river far below. You reach Barshong (3,710 m), a meadow beneath the ruins of an old fortress, where you camp for the night.

  • Day 7: Barshong → Dom Shisa
  • Today’s route continues through a mix of forested paths and open valleys, with gentle ascents and descents as you follow the river downstream. The terrain becomes softer and greener, signaling your gradual return to lower elevations. You arrive at Dom Shisa (3,350 m), your final campsite, surrounded by forested hills and the soothing sound of flowing water

  • Day 8: Dom Shisa → Thimphu
  • A short final trek leads you to the roadhead, where your vehicle awaits. The trail winds through forest and farmland, offering a gentle and reflective end to the journey. From here, you drive to Thimphu, completing your unforgettable Jomolhari Trek.
